RESOLUTION TO ENCOURAGE THE
UTAH STATE LEGISLATURE TO FORM A REDISTRICTING COMMISSION

Whereas, Utah is an increasingly diverse state, with multiple viewpoints, and

Whereas, the redistricting process of 2000 was widely recognized locally and nationally as mean-spirited, unfair, and unduly partisan, and

Whereas, having a legislative body redraw their own boundaries for partisan advantage harms the people of the State of Utah, and our representative government, and

Whereas, the next redistricting process is still five years away, allowing a civil discussion on this issue to take place, and

Whereas, in the year 2000 there was an ever-shifting philosophy for boundary adjustments, and

Whereas, non-partisan Redistricting Commissions function very well in other states in our country, and

Whereas, this would apply to any political party,

Therefore, be it resolved, that the Summit County Democratic Party supports the establishment of a Utah State Redistricting Commission for the good of the public.
